Terms of Service
Terms governing participation in the UCSF research study and use of the BRIDGE and BRIDGE Gather applications.
Effective date: October 8, 2026 | Last updated: October 8, 2026
1. Acceptance of These Terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") set the rules for using the BRIDGE and BRIDGE Gather ("GATHER") applications, operated by the University of California, San Francisco ("UCSF," "we," "us," or "our"). GATHER is the data-collection application that connects to the account your wearable device syncs to, retrieves your data through that platform's API (for Fitbit, the Google Health API), and stores it on UCSF internal servers; BRIDGE is the application used by your care team to view that data, primarily during appointments. Your participation in the research study (the "Study") is governed by your IRB-approved informed consent form, not by these Terms. These Terms do not change what you agreed to in your consent form and do not take away any of your rights. If you have questions about them, ask the study team before you connect your account.
2. Description of the Service
GATHER collects data from Study-assigned wearable devices (Fitbit, Oura, and Garmin) through those platforms' APIs — for Fitbit, the Google Health API — runs the data pipeline, and stores the data on UCSF internal servers. BRIDGE makes that collected data available to the clinical and research team for research analysis, Study operations, and — where applicable — participant care, including during patient appointments. Both applications are provided for research and care purposes only.
3. Eligibility
Use of BRIDGE and GATHER is limited to individuals who have been enrolled in the Study through the IRB-approved process and have provided informed consent, and to authorized UCSF personnel. You may not use the applications if you are not an enrolled participant or an authorized user.
4. Study-Provided Devices
Wearable devices are issued to participants by the Study. You agree to use the device assigned to you for the purposes of the Study and to follow any instructions provided by the Study team regarding wearing, charging, synchronizing, and returning the device. Devices remain the property of UCSF / the Study unless you are told otherwise, and may need to be returned at the end of your participation.
5. Device Connection and Authorization
To collect data, GATHER uses secure authorization (OAuth) provided by the wearable platforms. Google's permission screen will show the app as "BRIDGE Gather" and ask for read-only access to your activity and fitness, health metrics, and sleep data, and optionally your time-zone setting. [Team to confirm: until Google completes its review of the app, Google first shows a "Google hasn't verified this app" notice; the study team will show you how to continue.] By connecting your device, you authorize GATHER to access the specific categories of data you approve, for the duration of your participation, as described in the Privacy Policy. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your own wearable-platform account credentials.
6. Third-Party Services
The Applications rely on third-party wearable platforms (Fitbit/Google, Oura, and Garmin). Your use of those devices and services is also subject to each provider's own terms of service and privacy policy. UCSF does not control, and is not responsible for, those third-party services, their availability, or their data practices. GATHER's access to Google data is subject to our compliance with the Google API Services User Data Policy, the Google Health API Developer and User Data Policy, and the Google Health API User Data and Health Research Policy; and, for Oura and Garmin data, the Oura API License Agreement and the Garmin developer program terms.
7. Acceptable Use
You agree to use BRIDGE and GATHER only for lawful, Study-related purposes. You agree not to:
- Attempt to access data or accounts that are not yours;
- Interfere with, disrupt, or attempt to breach the security of the applications or UCSF systems;
- Reverse engineer, copy, or misuse the applications; or
- Use the applications in any way that violates applicable law, UCSF policy, or the Study protocol.
8. Data and Privacy
Our collection, use, storage, and protection of your data are described in our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these Terms by reference. Data is collected by GATHER, stored on UCSF internal servers, viewed through BRIDGE, and used only for the Study, research analysis, and improvement of patient care. We do not sell your data.
9. No Medical Advice; Not for Emergencies
BRIDGE, GATHER, and the data they handle are provided for research and informational purposes and, where applicable, to support — not replace — care provided by your clinical team. BRIDGE and GATHER are not medical devices, do not provide medical advice or diagnosis, and must not be relied upon in an emergency. Wearable data may be inaccurate or incomplete. No one monitors your wearable data as it is recorded. GATHER collects each day's data only after that day has ended in your time zone, sometimes days later if your device syncs late, and your care team may not look at it until your next appointment. If you have a symptom or concern, contact your care team directly, and call 911 in an emergency.
10. Intellectual Property
The BRIDGE and GATHER applications, including their software, design, and content (excluding your data and third-party content), are owned by UCSF / The Regents of the University of California and are protected by applicable law. These Terms do not grant you any ownership rights in the applications.
11. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, BRIDGE and GATHER are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the applications will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that wearable data will be accurate or complete.
12. Limitation of Liability
This section applies only to the BRIDGE and GATHER software, not to your participation in the Study. To the fullest extent permitted by law, UCSF and The Regents of the University of California are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages caused by the software being unavailable, interrupted, or inaccurate. Nothing in these Terms asks you to give up any of your legal rights as a research participant, or releases UCSF, the Study investigators, or anyone else from liability for negligence. Your rights, including what happens if you are injured as a result of being in the Study, are described in your informed consent form.
13. Withdrawal and Termination
Participation is voluntary. You may withdraw from the Study at any time, and remove BRIDGE Gather's access to your Google account (see Privacy Policy, Section 13), as described in your informed consent form and in the Privacy Policy. We may suspend or terminate access to the applications if required by the Study protocol, the IRB, UCSF policy, or applicable law, or when the Study ends.
14. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date above indicates when these Terms were last revised. If we make a change that affects participants, we will tell you before it takes effect and, when the IRB requires it, ask for your consent again. A change to these Terms will never reduce your rights under your informed consent form. If you do not agree with a change, you may withdraw from the Study and disconnect your account at any time.
15. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California and applicable United States federal law, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles, and subject to the policies of the University of California.
